Recycle Right June – Please Flatten Cardboard Boxes
To properly recycle cardboard boxes in common area recycling bins, they must be completely empty, broken down, and flattened to conserve space. Unflattened boxes cause bins to overflow instantly and may result in the entire bin being sent to a landfill instead of a recycling facility.
Review these quick rules to ensure your cardboard is properly prepared:
Prep the boxes: Remove all plastic wrap, Styrofoam inserts, packing peanuts, and bubble wrap before flattening. Tape, glue, and labels can generally be left on.
Flatten completely: Tear or cut along the seams so the box folds down entirely.
Check for stains: Boxes with grease, oil, or food residue (like pizza boxes) cannot be recycled. Toss heavily soiled pieces into the garbage bin.
Mind the space: Do not overstuff common area bins. If the shared bins are full, place your flattened cardboard neatly on the side of the bin.
