Golf Thoughts: The other day, on the ninth tee, my friend pull-tops a worm burner. It hits one in a group of geese who were on the ground about 40 yards from the tee. The victimized bird did about 10 convulsing flips and it finally came to rest.  It was awful. The other birds, who had scattered, returned to check on it, but it was not moving any more. So sad.

Another friend in our group, (let’s call him Mickey), grew up on a farm (and is about the nicest, gentlest person you’ll ever meet) says he was going to finish off the bird because it was probably still alive and in pain. The rest of us chose a route as far away from this scene as possible, but we were still able to see Mickey take out his 7wood and take a small swing at the bird. It flinched so he missed, but he immediately killed it with the next blow.

This was obviously the topic of conversation in our group for the rest of the round. A few holes later, because the course is soaking wet from overnight rains, another friend slips walking down the fairway and lands with a splat—flat on his back. He paused a moment in embarrassment on the ground. Quite obviously, his pants and shirt will be all wet and muddy when he stood up. Realizing this, my buddy Kyle says, “Aw man. You don’t even want to think about getting up. Stay down and don’t move a muscle!”
The rest of us are screaming, “No, Mickey! Put that 7wood away!
