This week was the culmination of the 9-hole Club Championship. The event was played over two Tuesdays with all players playing all eighteen holes. It did not disappoint, as last week Renee Woolard scored a nice 47 and Susie-Q Conklin a 49. This week the two-shot lead evaporated as Susie had a 46 and Renee a 48, both finishing with a gross 95. Off they went to a tie breaker on hole one. Both played it well, but Susie made her par putt and Renee narrowly missed. Congratulations to both ladies for amazing golf. Equally as worthy of congratulations is our net Champion, Gloria Lowry, who had a net 70 for two days of great play.
I have known Susie for many years, long before we both became Villagers, and I asked myself what makes her a great Club Champion. Here is what I decided, and I know all these characteristics could apply to Renee as well as Susie-Q.
A good golf champion is not defined only by how well they play. The best champions combine golfing ability with character, sportsmanship, and leadership. Sure, they exhibit skill and consistency, and they are mentally tough, but the characteristics I see are much more important.
- Sportsmanship — Plays fairly, follows the rules, and treats competitors with respect.
- Integrity — Is honest about scores, rules, and tricky situations, even when no one is watching.
- Positive attitude — Maintains enthusiasm and optimism whether having a great round or a difficult one.
- Grace in victory and defeat — Celebrates winning without arrogance and accepts losing without making excuses.
- Respect for others — Treats fellow players, staff, volunteers, and club members courteously.
- Leadership — Sets a positive example and represents the club with pride.
- Humility — Understands that being a champion is an honor, not a reason to feel superior.
- Encourages others — Supports and motivates other golfers and helps make the game enjoyable for everyone.
- Commitment to the club — Participates, volunteers, and contributes to the overall spirit of the golf community.
- Love of the game — Shows genuine enjoyment and appreciation for golf.
In short: A great golf champion has the game to win, the character to represent the club, and the heart to make others better.
