The Men’s 18-Hole Golf Club, Club Championship Tournament, is underway and in full swing. After the first weekend there are three amazingly good stories that were to come out of this event.
- Jim Valenti had a hole in one on #6 during the tournament! “I used a 5 wood from the 3 tees to a distance of 168 yards. And that was the 617th time I shot my age. I shot an 81 that day. So, it was pretty special. That’s my best round all year.” I would say so, Jim! As per Jess Martinez, his playing partner, “Valenti is almost 90 and gets a HIO. Unreal!”
- Brian Sullivan and Rob Hands were competing against each other on Sunday, and they came to hole 18 all knotted up. At the worst possible time Brian flew the green and his ball stopped in the sand trap in the back. He made a wonderful shot out, but his ball would not check or slow down and continued to roll off the green and finally into the creek in front. As he made the walk across the green towards the creek, he was muttering to himself and saying things that even I can’t repeat. Then he proceeded to take his left shoe and sock off, placed his foot firmly on the silty surface of the creek bed, and with a full swing he blasted tons of water and the golf ball onto the putting surface. No way you say… uh yes way, I was there and witnessed it. He then proceeded to make the 10-foot putt to tie the hole and take the match into overtime to hole #1. I can’t tell you how delighted Rob Hands was with that up and down. I’m sure he will not soon forget it.
- And we would be remiss if we did not mention the monumental, 75-foot, clutch putt that was made by Geoff Gault to win his match on the 19th hole against Thomas Mendoza. I’m sure Thomas was delighted by that.
