A warm late summer day, a well-paced game of golf with friends and a lively competition for Captain’s Trophy. Michelle Chung shared at lunch that Jane Hong had an excellent round and she also enjoyed the company of Monica Saneholtz and Priscilla Piper. Well, Jane was not the only one with an excellent round for the Captain’s Trophy for October. Jane tied with Suzanne Fazzio with net 67, five under par for high accolades. Low putt this month is our very own Geri Wilk with 28. Geri, I want a bit of the steel cut Irish oats you had for breakfast. Or maybe you had a putting lesson for breakfast? That’s one good putt score. Closest to the pin was Judy Frey at 23 inches, and yes, she made the putt.
The chip-in queens were: Vicki Krattli #16, Emily Li #4, Judy Rodriguez #5, and Suzy Kim “the double dipper” for #4 and #15. Great playing Suzy! The birdie bug landed firmly on to the putters of Helen Varenkamp #8, Monica Saneholtz #7, Diana Hallock #11, Emily Li #4, and Suzy Kim #15. Terrific efforts ladies. Bev Poellot reminded us that birdie pins are available for those who record a birdie in 2026. “Break pins” are available for those who “break” into the next lower scoring level of ten. For example, Camille Giuliodibari broke the 80 barrier with her win for Captain’s Trophy on September 3, with her lowest score on our course, a gross 77. So, it’s a “broke 80 pin” for Camille. Congratulations!
We were introduced to our new clubhouse manager Tim Murphy. Tim has a myriad of experience in the hospitality field and he is eager to work with members and staff. Good things are coming our way. Mazie reminded us all that the nominating committee is still searching for co-captain for next year. Many talented ladies in our group are well qualified, and next year’s co-captain will have the added blessing of an Invitational Tournament that is largely set up already. Step up and help your club! We need you.
Captain Mazie Rice introduced a themed table discussion to brainstorm how to handle some potential prickly, sharp-edged happenstance that sometimes occur in club play. When etiquette and kindness blend, golf becomes a welcoming community rather than an intimidating exclusive sport. Etiquette is about the unwritten and written rules that keep the game moving safely and fairly. This shows respect for the course, the staff and your fellow players. Scenarios for discussion included:
1) You are playing a friendly but competitive round. A player in your group constantly steps on your line of putt or talks during your backswing. However, they are a nice person and always apologize when called out. How do you gently address bad etiquette without ruining the mood of the group?
2) Your playing partner is having a terrible day on the course. They are visibly frustrated, hitting into hazards and bringing down the energy of the entire group. What is the best way to show kindness to a struggling golfer without coming across as patronizing or annoying?
3) Your club is hosting a mixer, and you are paired with a brand-new golfer who plays very slowly and doesn’t know the rules well, causing a backup on the holes behind you. How do you balance being welcoming and kind to a beginner while still respecting the pace of play for the rest of the field?
4) You have lost your ball. How do you ask the rest of your foursome to help you find your ball?
5) You are responsible for the group’s scorecard. One player is notorious for losing track of their score. What are some of the ways you can assist a player in retracing their score?
Give these themes a good think. Talk these scenarios up with your “sistas” in golf. Developing a thoughtful strategy beforehand that centers on etiquette and kindness goes a long way toward enriching the golf experience in our ladies club, deepening our friendships, protecting the field for fair play and avoiding unintended conflicts. This improves the game for all of us. Enjoy golf. Come play with us!
